Volvo Trucks has introduced a 14-tonne gross weight version of its medium-duty FL Electric, which retains compact dimensions suitable for door-to-door deliveries and debuts a new battery combination, extending its operational range beyond the existing 16- and 18-tonne variants.
The new batteries, offering 145 kWh of usable energy, are already deployed across other electric industrial vehicles from the manufacturer, from the new 14-tonne FL Electric to the 16- and 18-tonne versions, as well as the Volvo FE Electric models with a gross vehicle weight of up to 26 tonnes. The Swedish manufacturer notes that the FL and FE electric versions have been available since 2019 and are sold in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia, while the full line-up now includes eight battery-electric truck models with more than five thousand units sold worldwide.
This new 14-tonne model delivers a range of up to around 200 kilometres, depending on load, driving style and environmental conditions. The electric motor produces a maximum output of 180 kW, with ground clearance of 240 millimetres and wheelbases ranging from 3800 to 6500 millimetres. DC charging from 20% to 80% takes roughly 1.28 hours with eight battery units. Production is scheduled for the second half of 2026.
Jan Hjelmgren, head of product management at Volvo Trucks, highlights the importance of selecting the appropriate energy capacity for daily missions to boost productivity and payload. The company offers a wide choice of wheelbases, axle configurations and battery options, enabling customers to tailor the truck to their operational needs. Battery installation has been designed not to interfere with potential bodywork on the chassis, which is crucial for municipal services, food distribution or specialised applications. The vehicle’s width of up to 2.4 metres enhances manoeuvrability in urban areas, a segment where compactness has a direct impact on delivery times.
