The restructuring plan of the Swiss rail freight company SBB Cargo involves downsizing both its workforce and its service network, sparking union protests. According to information released by the company, several smaller loading points will be shut down and operations in less profitable areas will be scaled back. The direct consequence is a hit to employment affecting several hundred workers.
The company’s financial difficulties stem from high operating costs and a steady loss of competitiveness against road haulage, which in recent years has gained ground thanks to greater flexibility and lower prices. Internal figures show that already in 2022 the volumes handled by SBB Cargo were declining, with shrinking profit margins. The crisis has been deepened by rising energy costs and difficulties in keeping facilities fully utilised.
Trade unions warn of the risk of a gradual dismantling of Switzerland’s comprehensive rail freight service. The closure of secondary facilities, they point out, entails job losses not only within SBB Cargo but also across the supply chain in handling and distribution. The company has confirmed the elimination of 65 positions, including 40 in Ticino. In this canton, a demonstration took place in Mendrisio on 29 August 2025.
From the company’s perspective, the plan is justified by the need to improve profitability in a market facing mounting competition in freight transport and the heavy costs of maintaining the network. Unions, however, argue that the strategy jeopardises the public service function of rail freight, curtailing accessibility for small and medium-sized businesses that rely on local connections. Talks between management and workers’ representatives are ongoing, with demands for a revision of the plan and accompanying measures for affected employees. Labour organisations stress the importance of solutions that safeguard employment, whether through greater public support or a gradual adaptation of the operating model.
