The MSC Group plans to venture into the construction of railway rolling stock by acquiring the abandoned marine engine facility from Wärtsilä in Trieste. This announcement was made by Gianluigi Aponte during an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX, following a meeting with the President of the Liguria Region, Giovanni Toti, and the Deputy Minister of Transport, Edoardo Rixi. Aponte stated that an agreement has been reached to reopen the plant and rehire all 300 workers who were laid off, aiming to construct wagons for freight transport. It remains unclear whether MSC will produce the rolling stock exclusively for its railway companies (Medway, Medlog, and the Spanish Renfe Mercancias) or if it will also sell to the broader market.
