The recent years have seen significant development in the contract logistics sector in Italy, with economic growth particularly impacting Emilia-Romagna. In 2023, the logistics market in this region generated revenues of 10.9 billion euros, marking a 5.7% increase from the previous year. Over a broader period, the region's growth is even more remarkable: turnover has risen from 7.6 billion euros in 2018 to 10.9 billion euros in 2023. This substantial increase surpasses the national average, establishing the region as a benchmark in the sector. Emilia-Romagna alone accounts for 9% of the national contract logistics turnover, with over 400 dedicated properties and an additional 500,000 square meters under construction.
These figures were presented at the conference "Strategy, Innovation, and Sustainability: The Future of Logistics," organized by the Gino Marchet Contract Logistics Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano. The event took place on June 18, 2024, at the GreenLab of Kerakoll in Sassuolo. Damiano Frosi, director of the Contract Logistics Observatory, stated: "The numbers demonstrate a continuously growing logistics supply chain, and the regions involved in the conference see logistics services as a driver for the economic growth of the territory, combined with environmental and social sustainability."
During the meeting, the Observatory also provided an overview of the national logistics landscape, which has shown continuous growth, increasing from 7.2% of GDP in 2019 to 8.9% in 2022. The sector's value rose from 119 billion euros in 2019 to 157 billion euros in 2022. The contract logistics sector, in particular, has seen almost uninterrupted growth since 2009, surpassing 114 billion euros in 2022. The regions of Northern Italy - notably Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, and Lombardy - account for 53% of Italy's third-party logistics turnover. These regions also host 35% of the logistics service providers organized as joint-stock companies.
