The Milan-based airport operator SEA took the opportunity of the Transport Logistic 2025 trade fair in Munich to present the “Milano Malpensa Cargo Community” project, a collaborative platform that brings together all players in the air freight supply chain around a shared development vision. The company explains that the initiative aims to establish a new operational model, where handlers, freight forwarders, airlines, express couriers, road hauliers and technology providers work in close integration with SEA to enhance system efficiency, improve services and tackle the challenges of the global market with a unified approach. This is not merely a coordination exercise, but rather the creation of an ecosystem capable of evolving into a common platform with clear goals and shared tools.
The value of this initiative has already been confirmed by a prestigious international accolade. Malpensa has been named “Airport of the Year 2025 – Regional Cargo Hub” at the World Air Cargo Awards organised by Air Cargo Week. The award saw Malpensa beat other major airports such as Bangalore, Munich, Brussels and Budapest in the final round, highlighting the airport’s growing role as a European cargo hub. According to Francesco Raschi, SEA’s Director of Cargo & Real Estate, the recognition is the result of collective effort: “It is a tangible demonstration that working as a system, enhancing expertise and investing in technology delivers concrete results. Malpensa is confirmed not only as the national leader in cargo, but as an increasingly strategic reference point in the European landscape.”
Among the tools already in place at the Lombard airport is the Cargo Service Charter, a unique document in the national context that enables transparent monitoring and certification of operator performance through a shared system approved by ENAC. This is complemented by the Smart City digital ecosystem, which enables full digitalisation of processes and real-time information exchange among all actors in the supply chain, including carriers, handlers, freight forwarders and customs authorities.
